The New Citizen Kane continues to prove he’s one of the most interesting artists in modern indie-electronic music. His newest EP, *Well, Damn! Here You Are*, builds on his Psychedelika era and demonstrates how to combine dance-floor joy with the messiness of addiction.
The title track is one of revelation. It captures that 3am of weakness – the drunken phone call when self-awareness throws in the towel to a toxic connection. Musically it fuses this moody, night-time feel of trip-hop and a new disco groove that makes you move as your heart sinks. The hook, “You’re goody goody, gosh, but you’re bad bad bad for me,” is an earworm that’s catchy and at the same time, very sad.
Beyond the single, the EP is very varied. “Holding On” is a high-energy disco song which balances the more introspective songs with pure kinetic power. A surprise highlight is the cover of Samantha Mumba’s “Gotta Tell You.” Kane takes this Y2K pop classic and puts a fresh deep house spin on it that perfectly slots into the EP’s overall feel.
What makes this release stand out is maturity. Kane Luke isn’t just making club tracks, he’s telling stories about patterns we can’t seem to break. Whether you’re listening for the detailed production of the Synthphonica Radio Mixes, or the raw honesty of the lyrics, this EP is a must-hear. It’s a courageous, confessional and ultimately triumphant collection from an artist at the top of his game.
